Our Understanding of The Gospel
The gospel of Jesus Christ that saves sinners is the good news that, despite humanity's sin and separation from God, God has made a way for sinners to be rescued from His wrath and reconciled to Him through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
The Problem of Our Sin and God’s Wrath: Every person is born in sin, separated from God, and deservingly under His wrath for our sins (Romans 3:23). Our sin separates us from the holy God who created us, and we are totally unable to save ourselves.
God’s Provision in Jesus: Out of His great love and mercy, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to live a perfect life and die on the cross as the substitute for sinners (Romans 5:8). Jesus took the penalty for our sin—death—upon Himself, paying the price that we could never pay in order to redeem and rescue sinners from the eternal wrath of God.
The Resurrection: Jesus didn’t stay dead. He rose from the grave on the third day, conquering sin and death once and for all. His resurrection proves that He is the Son of God and the Savior who offers eternal life to all who believe in Him (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
Salvation by Grace through Faith: The gospel tells us that salvation is a free gift of God's grace. It cannot be earned by good works or religious deeds, but is received by faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). When we repent (turn from our sins) and trust in Jesus as our Savior, we are forgiven and made right with God.
New Life in Christ: In salvation, those who believe are not only forgiven and declared righteous (justified) by God—they are also adopted into God’s family. We also receive the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live a new life in Christ, growing in holiness (sanctification), and living for His glory (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Eternal Hope: Through Jesus’ work, believers have eternal life with God and will one day live eternally with Him in a new heaven and new earth where we will enjoy perfect fellowship with Him free from sin forever (John 14:3; Revelation 21:1-4).
In summary, the gospel is the proclamation that through Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection from the dead—sinners can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and receive eternal life—by grace, through faith, for the glory of God.
